Public Meeting Focuses on South Shaftsbury Village
Over forty residents of Shaftsbury turned out recently at a meeting with representatives from the Department of Housing and Community Development and the BCRC to discuss challenges and potential solutions for the South Shaftsbury Village area. The Village is an officially designated Village Center, offering some important benefits and opportunities to access special programs and funding. The BCRC’s transportation program manager, Mark Anders, spoke about the many current deficiencies along the Route 7A corridor as well as opportunities for enhancing the streetscape to create a safe and attractive village center. He suggested that the town apply for a planning grant to pursue a streetscape design project.
The town currently is working with the BCRC to revise their comprehensive land use regulations with an eye toward adopting standards that enable and encourage compact mixed use development. For more information on Vermont’s Village Centers Program, go to: Vermont Village Center Designations
