Bennington Downtown Area-Wide Plan

The Bennington Downtown Area-Wide Plan was a hybrid project utilizing the protocols from two successful programs in Vermont - a new brownfields program sponsored by the Vermont Agency of Natural Resources (ANR) and the Vermont Agency of Commerce and Community Development (ACCD) and the processes employed in eight communities as part of the Vermont Downtown Action Team (VDAT) disaster recovery project.

The Town of Bennington hired BCRC to manage the project and to do much of the GIS, mapping and background data research in support of the project consultant. Following a Request for Proposal (RFP) process, the project steering committee selected a team of consultants led by Stone Environmental (Montpelier) to conduct the study. The consulting team included Stone (environmental consultants), Greenman-Pedersen Inc (landscape architecture/master planning), Centerline Architects, and Doug Kennedy Advisers (market study).

It is hoped that the Bennington Downtown Area-Wide Plan will be a tool used by prospective developers of downtown properties to help them better understand and assess opportunities for revitalization in the community’s urban core. The plan is available here and the project Story Map is available here.
